I ran into a former student at the local health club. I had just finished my workout and was walking around the indoor track cooling down. Liam was playing basketball with his friends on the court…
It is exhausting trying to transform yourself into a new mindset when on social media, in 2020, every person is just insecurely projecting their own weaknesses of not being able to follow through with their own resolutions.
Seriously, you want to have a New Years' resolution? Don’t worry, someone on twitter is going to tweet that “Resolutions are stupid”, get 50k likes on it, and then someone else will repost that tweet to Instagram, get more likes and more views until finally, people post it to their stories for me to see.
I don’t know about anyone else, but I am sick and tired of being put down for just doing or liking anything.
For example, when many girls like doing or wearing the same thing, you will most likely see it being made fun of by a prominent entertainment account, such as Barstool Sports, simply because many girls are doing it. Once it is picked up on by other women that these predominately male social media pages have been making fun of it, they stop. They feel ashamed.
As I am typing this I know it sounds whiny. Maybe it is. I don’t care.
It is this type of bandwaggon-hate that perpetuates a divide between people.
I know, you can just close out your device or tablet or whatever and just not look at the tweets and ignore them. You can acknowledge that it is purely for entertainment purposes. Totally valid.
You can also say that people are talking about it because so many people are doing it, so of course, someone is going to talk about it. Totally fair.
I am talking about the long-term effects of a space where things are “shamed”. The internet is increasing with users every day, with the majority of users using the internet as their primary source of accurate information about the news, trends, etc.
When the President of the United States is using twitter as the official way to send out messages to the people and the world, things need to be clear:
Twitter is not real life. It has never been. No one is fact-checking anything anyone says except anyone else online. There is no omniscient being checking each tweet for accuracy. Individuals need to be made aware that not everything on the internet is real. Put down your phone and look outside. Go for a walk. Ask yourself what you want to do to better yourself instead.
