What My Name Means To Me

September 9, 2022

30-Day Challenge, Day Nine

My legal name is Deborah, but I prefer Debbie or Deb. As legend has it, I was named after one of the female stars back in the 1950s.

At first, my stepfather told me I was named after the beautiful Deborah Kerr. Later, my mother just laughed and said I was named after Debbie Reynolds. Both actresses had successful careers.

Debbie Reynolds began her career in 1950, but her first breakout role came in 1953. Debbie starred with Gene Kelly and Donald O’Connor in Singin’ in the Rain in 1953. Here’s a snippet of the famous threesome:

Of course. Debbie’s daughter, Carrie Fisher, had her own acting career with the iconic role of Princess Leia she played in Star Wars with Mark Hamil as Luke Skywalker.

Debbie was born in 1932 and died in 2016 at the age of 84. Debbie died one day following the death of her daughter, Carrie Fisher, who was 60 years old.

Debbie was visiting her son, Todd, to make the arrangements for Carrie’s memorial when she had a fatal heart attack. When the news was revealed, Carrie’s daughter reported that her mother struggled most of her life with addiction and mental illness.

Mother and daughter shared a successful Hollywood career but ended in tragedy.

Deborah Kerr came to the big screen in 1953 with the film, From Here to Eternity. She starred with Burt Lancaster, and they shared their iconic scene on the beach in Hawaii. In those film days, this scene was considered very risqué. Take a peek:
