It is the dread of unraveling the mysterious that demands caution, and the hazy sense of amorous fever that should be guarded from touching the material, from falling on earth. For whatever…

Our strongest strength is our biggest weakness

#24strong #equity

Character strengths are contagious, but there is also weakness found in our strengths. Too much of something can be a fault, yet so can having too little.

So… here’s me:

Kindness as my number one strength, fairness as my next, and humor as my third.

With too much kindness I can be seen as what we might call a “pushover,” but what I really struggled with is my high ranking of “fairness.” With my study of equity within life and classroom I had a hard time answering some of these character strength questions. Questions similar to: “I treat everybody equally,” and “I lead all fairly regardless of background” (these are not the exact questions, but paraphrased). It became apparent that this quiz was not created with an equity lense which made it difficult for me with the issue at the forefront of my mind to answer easily. Do I treat everyone equally? No, not at all. Because we don’t all need the exact same treatment to succeed. I treat my students with what each one needs, even though it might be different for each student based on their experiences. I distribute what they need so they can all equally be successful. Which coincides with the definition of fairness but not equality.

I began to struggle more and more with whether or not this distribution of strengths was accurate. I have the responsibility to bring this program back to my school family and I wanted to make sure I thoroughly grappled with my thoughts before I did. My next thought was to reach out to my equity PLN, Michael Parker West and Jenni George, two wonderful teachers I met through my REI training.

Michael imparted some wisdom on me in regards to the struggle I was having with my “fairness” diagnosis.

Now it seems the next step is to figure out how to bring this information with the equity lense to my school family. If I want to speak on behalf of equity, it will need to be in all aspects of my education, not just when it’s convenient.
