Design a perfect icon in 4 steps

Every product needs icons. They are tiny, miniature visual representations of functions that users can easily find and click. Here are four steps that you can consider when designing your unique icon packs.

First, try to think if your function can be expressed with abstract icons. For example, you may use a trapezoid and two circles to represent a shopping cart. Most things can be described with simple lines and dots, so it is a good idea to keep your icons simple.

Second, you can also choose to combine two elements in a function. When you try to create an icon for the function “add to cart,” you can draw a shopping cart and place a plus sign on top of it. It works just like translating text into sign language.

Number three, adjust the style according to the circumstances. Lifestyle-related apps tend to use rounded corners for icons, while business applications usually have icons with thin lines and clear edges. You should make sure that all your icons have consistent styles.

Last but not least, try to integrate your brand into your icon design. Google, for instance, uses standard green, blue, yellow, and red colors on all of its app icons, so users know that the app is developed by Google, which stands for quality.
