Gran parte della mia vita lavorativa si è svolta in ambito aziendale e, anche senza declamarlo né aspettarmi che venisse conclamato, l’ho vissuta come psicologo quale fui assunto ormai quasi 35 anni…
I recently read a great book called The truce, by Mario Benedetti, a recognized Uruguayan author known for his novels and poetry. The Truce, published in 1960, is considered one of his masterpieces.
The plot is fairly simple. We follow the life of 49-year-old Martín Santomé, he’s been a widower for 20 years and has three adults kids. He’s one year away from retiring and he constantly asks himself what’s he going to do when he has unlimited free time.
He lives a depressed life, he doesn’t enjoy his routine and the relationship with his kids is quite dysfunctional. What makes this book great is that we follow Santomé’s life from his diary entries.
Thanks to this, you feel immersed on his day-to-day life, you see the world through his eyes and learn how he feels about everything that happens in his life, from simple facts like what he thinks of his coworkers to more meaningful thoughts like what happens on his mind when he falls in love with a woman much younger than him.
The book revolves around that last situation. Laura Vellaneda has been hired to work in Santomé’s office. At first, nothing happens between them, but Santomé starts to feel weird when he thinks about her: He realizes he is falling in love.
They start dating and then, Santomé realizes he is feeling alive again, the mere presence of Avellaneda in his life is changing everything for him. As I read the book, I felt their love was so pure and sincere. I found some passages that describe what this pure love feels like and what it is that we like so much about having someone special in our lives, sometimes I find it difficult to make sense of what I am exactly feeling when in a relationship, reading this book helped me more than I thought. Let’s start with the passages.
