Surprising Traditions People follow on Christmas in Different parts of the World.

Christmas time is the most widely accepted & celebrated holiday of the year. Every country in the world waits for this time of the year to come, even though most of them have very different ways of celebrating the festival.
Let’s get to know some of the oddest traditions carried around in different parts of the world that we found out about.

2. Italy: Instead of Santa Claus, Italian children wait for Befana, a friendly witch who delivers sweets & toys on the 5th of January.

3. India: Christmas celebrations in India are humble ones, considering we go out all the way on some other festivals. Christians decorate their homes, have a nice feast & visit the church.

4. South Africa: On Christmas, the locals eat deep fried caterpillars of the Emperor Moth. This delicacy is definitely not for the faint hearted.

5. Austria: Austrian children live in the fear of Krampus- an Austrian devil who is known to beat naughty children with tree branches. Not very Merry, that one!

6. Norway: On Christmas eve, people don’t clean in Norway because all the brooms are hidden away safely in case the witches & evil spirits come over to steal them.

7. Ukraine: Ukrainians are quite creative with their Christmas decorations. Instead of tinsels and baubles, they decorate the tree with artificial spider and webs.

8. Guatemala: Guatemalan sweeps out their homes before Christmas. Each neighborhood will then create a large pile of dirt before placing an effigy of devil on the top, and burning it.

9. Greece: During 12 days of Christmas, Kallikantzaroi, evil goblin who otherwise live underground, come to the land of people to wreak havoc.

10. Japan: If you’re ever in Japan during this time of the year, be careful that you only buy red coloured greeting cards and not white ones. White cards, over there are used for funeral announcements.

11. England: Christmas morning comes with surprises in stockings that children put out on Christmas eve for Santa to drop presents in. The good ones get presents & the naughty ones get socks full of coal.

12. Iceland: Pretty much like the Italians, children in Iceland put their shoes out to find sweets and toys in them the next morning. Instead of keeping them outside their homes, they put them on windowsills.
