Gen Z and TikTok

If you told me 5 years ago that TikTok would be one of the most popular social media apps that has changed the meaning of an “influencer” and shows no signing of slowing down, I would not believe you. Launched in 2016 for creating and sharing video content, most people like myself did not first admit that they were on TikTok. When I downloaded the app in 2019, I was embarrassed to tell others that I used it, but now people are shocked if you aren’t using it.

Although it is still used by many to post videos of whatever they want and used as a creative outlet, people have made careers out of TikTok and for some it is a full time job. Influencers and “TikTokers” work with brands to promote their products, organizations and businesses have their own accounts, and most celebrities have also hopped on the TikTok train. Basically, if you are not on TikTok, you will be left behind and out of the loop. So, what do the facts tell us about Gen Z and other generations?

As you can see, the younger Gen Zs who range from 10–19 make up the biggest users of TikTok at 25%, with the older Gen Zs who are 20–29 making up the second biggest portion at 22.4%. So, at nearly 50%, Gen Z dominates TikTok.

Some other facts about Gen Z and TikTok given by Statista is that out of 78.7 million users in the United Sates, 37.3 million are apart of Gen Z. By 2025, this number is expected to increase to 48.8 million, which would surpass Instagram’s Gen Z audience.

As the age group increases, their dominance decreases. This makes sense, as TikTok is geared towards younger people, but the 50+ group at 11% is still high.

In general, TikTok has opened up a new world for the younger generation, and anyone is able to become famous or successful off of TikTok. As we have seen over the past couple of years, a simple and fun video can go viral, and before you know it you can be signing brand deals and making enough money to quit your day job.

Also, more and more businesses have been joining TikTok, as it is a great way to connect with their customers and to reach a wider group of people. Personally, I have found many small businesses or discovered new products through TikTok, and it is fun to see how they interact with users who comment on their video. I am able to click on a company’s TikTok page and easily be sent to their website where I am able to buy what I am seeing in their videos.

As the years go on, do you think it is a smart marketing move for businesses to join TikTok? Gen Z is currently dominating TikTok, so if that is a business’s target market, I believe that they should 100% be on TikTok as it is an easy and fun way to engage with current and potential customers.

Overall, while TikTok is mainly dominated by Gen Z, that does not mean it should stop businesses from getting on there and promoting their brand and products, because if they don’t then the face the risk of getting left behind.
