I was recently invited to host an educational discussion about human sexuality in the Intimate Telegram group. My first thought was, “Why me?” because I don’t generally tend to think about myself as the sort of person who moderates discussions, I suppose; my second, third, and sixth thoughts centered around the content I could cover, the lives I could change with better information about sex! Granted a platform, I suddenly had so much to say and teach that it was a struggle to narrow down the topics for quick consumption, but I managed with the wonderful editorial help of Leah, intimate’s co-founder.

I’ll admit, I was nervous on the day of. Most people in crypto spheres are men, and I wasn’t sure how open to new sexual ideas they would be! Would I have any participation at all? What would I do if someone asked a question I couldn’t answer? How would I avoid the stickiness of some contentious topics to keep thing civil?

Luckily, everyone who participated came to the panel ready to discuss, not argue. I was pleasantly surprised to find that consent was a topic everyone was already familiar with — they pre-empted my own intentions to bring it up, which I greatly enjoyed, and several times they brought up viewpoints I hadn’t considered before.

Being exposed to a community full of people from other countries, with different experiences and sociopolitical concerns, helped me grow as an activist. It helped me understand that even on the other side of the world, people think about sex and life, death and taxes; for a few hours, Intimate helped make the world seem a little more … Well, intimate! I’m in several crypto Telegram groups and I’ve yet to experience such a friendly, experienced atmosphere anywhere else!
