Many of us lead busy lives, and at times it feels like time passes by without even realizing it. This is caused by many aspects around us, some are so microscopic that we are unconscious of them. Living in an age where a substantial amount of information is packed in small dosages and expectations are higher than ever, we can easily get lost in our thoughts. That is why we must stay in the present moment and stay focused on what matters most. Below, I have summarized 5 methods that help me stay grounded and in the present.

1- Remember to breathe — Yes, as simple as it sounds, most people unconsciously hold their breath while doing cognitive tasks. I often realize that I’m holding my breath while reading an email, watching a thrilling scene, or typing a post on medium..

2- Let go of things you cannot control — This is perhaps the hardest one. There are so many variables in our lives that we can’t control; whether it’s sickness, death, or how Game of Thrones ended. Some things we just can’t control, and the sooner we accept them the way they are, the sooner we can be at peace with the unknown.

3- Go on a walk — Walking is perhaps one of the best forms of simple exercise a person can do. It is proven to have amazing health benefits such as increased cardiovascular and pulmonary (heart and lung) fitness, reduced risk of heart disease and stroke, and improved management of conditions such as hypertension (high blood pressure), high cholesterol, and many more. It’s also linked to improving mental health; and overall self-esteem and perception.

4- Enjoy the little things — Hopefully we all have great things to look forward to in life, but it is important to enjoy the little things as well. Day after day we let small details go unnoticed. It’s important to be conscious of these details, especially when they can mean a whole lot more for people we care about.

5- Be flexible — The older we get, the more we realize that not everything we want goes our way. Most of the struggle happens when we do not adapt to the changes around us, and suddenly we find ourselves stuck in the past, not able to catch up with the fast-changing world. That is why it’s important to stay flexible. Regardless of what our plan was, our actions should be based on what is necessary now, not what was necessary then.
